Biographical Notes

Carlo Rea was born in 1962 (mother of german descent, father, Ermanno, journalist and writer). Still very young he begins to attend violin classes at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan. Later, due to family reasons, he moves to Naples. Here he attends the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella where he also begins studying viola. Finally, having moved one more time, he brilliantly graduates from Conservatorio Santa Cecilia, in Rome. During this time he closely follows artistic and musical contemporary environment, studying and playing compositions by authors such as Luciano Berio, Salvatore Sciarrino, Franco Donatoni, Fausto Romitelli, who dedicates to him Ganimede, a piece for solo viola. At the beginning of the Eighties, the impact with Rome and its cultural and artistic atmosphere as well as with abstract painting, turns out crucial. From this period are the first drawings of “visual scores”, drawings based on musical handwritings conceived to be only looked at, in which notation becomes pictorial form. From this time on, in Rea, the study of music and the practice of painting merge into a single language. After being violist for the Symphonic Orchestra of Accademia di Santa Cecilia for almost a decade, already having been able to perform famous scores directed by great international maestros, Carlo Rea decides to abandon music and Rome in order to devote himself entirely to visual arts. In 1991 he is in Paris, where he prepares his first solo exhibition, opening the following year at Galerie Berthet Aittouares.
This events marks a turning point in his irreversible commitment to pictorial art In 1994 french magazine MUSEEART reviews the exhibitions Voyage d’hiver and Omaggio a Montale [Homage to Montale] - which was set in the Italian Cultural Insitute of Paris - highlighting the deep intertwining of music and painting. Carlo Rea’s creative path goes through the use of materials considered to be extra-pictorial yet retaining an inherent plastic value: wood, burlap, asphalt, terracotta, ceramic etc. he always searches through these materials looking for vibration, sound and breath. Experiences follow one another, consumed by a voracity typically belonging to the one who persistently seeks a stylistic landing place within himself, avoiding any diverting enticement. By the end of the Nineties he is back in Italy and works on the connections between music, art and medicine, also creating and taking care of two editions (2001 and 2002) of the Crossover Festival, dealing with art and medicine. It is only after this experience, entailing a long creative hiatus, following the meeting and friendship with Enrico Castellani that Carlo Rea returns to plastic art: the result of this ‘absence’ is an extremely sifted painting, by now rarefied, to the limit of visual permanence, thus becoming a reflection on the impermanent condition of being.
